The objective of the Wrekin Barrel Race is to carry a full 9 gallon beer barrel, weighing 56kg, from the bottom of The Wrekin to the top in the quickest possible time - that's a vertical distance of 240m (800 feet) and a path distance of 1.8km.
In 2010, always with a smile dedicated the race in loving memory of Eleanor Payne, who was one of three British students killed in a tragic bus crash in South Africa on June 10th. Aged only 19 and a former student of mine, I can honestly say that she was one of the kindest and most delightful girls I ever taught. I also came to know Eleanor as a friend, and if there was ever a person who opitimised the always with a smile ethos, it was her.

Have just watched the Wrekin Barrel Tace 2010. You are an inspiration!!! I obviously didn't know Eleanor Payne, but I do believe she would have been smiling down on you on Sunday!!! If it is any consolation, I was recovering from my birthday party on Sunday morning, and I GUARANTEE my blisters were bigger than yours!!!?? Joking apart though, your determination and tenacity is amazing!!!!xx
