The World Coal Carrying Championships take place every Easter Monday in the village of Gawthorpe. Competitors, each carrying 50 kg of coal, have to run close on a mile, 1108. 25 yards to be precise, as quickly as possible, before being allowed to drop the "secks ‘o’ coil" at the foot of the Maypole, which stands on the village green. The current record time is an incredible 4 minutes and 6 seconds!
