World Coal Carrying Championships

On Easter Monday, hundreds of spectators enjoyed the 47th annual Gawthorpe World Coal Carrying Championships, in which runners carry 50kg sacks of coal over a 1,100m course, starting at the Royal Oak pub, in Gawthorpe, before dropping their sacks under a maypole on the village green. Ironically sponsored by a funeral directors, I took part in this test of endurance and strength dressed as an orangutan.
